Family Night to Include Bike Rodeo, Movie in the Park, and More in Elma!

Plans are underway for a “Family Fun” night in Elma on Friday, August 8th. Rain date will be August 15th. The event will kick off with a Bike Rodeo Safety Education event for kids and will be followed up with a “Family Bike, Walk, Run Parade” along Elma’s bike trail and then conclude with the movie – “Goonies” in the park. Elma’s Museums will also be open Friday evening along with the concession stand at the Elma park. Please plan to join us for all or part of the activities whether you have children or not.

Registration for the Bike Rodeo is from 6-6:30pm at the Elma park. Participants in the bike rodeo should bring their own bike and helmet, if they have one. All ages are invited to attend this fun-filled event to learn about bike safety and practice their skills on an obstacle course. There will be multiple stations including stations to learn bike maintenance and first aid, decorate your bikes, use a bike blender, and more. Participants will have a chance to win door prizes. Boy scouts are encouraged to attend as their will be opportunities to check of requirements for bicycle safety whether they are a wolf, bear, webelo, or boy scout.

1,000s of children are injured, sometimes fatally, each year in traffic crashes while riding their bikes. Educating children on bicycle safety at a young age is the best way for children to develop smart biking habits and reduce their risk of being involved in a traffic crash. A Bike Rodeo is a great opportunity for all to learn and practice “bicycle smarts” in a supervised setting.

At 7:45 pm families can participate in a “Family Bike, Walk, or Run Parade” which will leave from Elma Park and proceed North to bike trail. Participants can go as far as they would like down the bike trail and back.

At 9pm or dusk the movie “The Goonies” will be played in the park utilizing the new stage in the ball diamond. This is free to everyone. Please bring your own lawn chair or blanket to sit on. “The Goonies” is a pg rated adventure–comedy film. The film’s premise features a band of pre-teens who live in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon attempting to save their homes from demolition, and in doing so, discover an old Spanish map that leads them on an adventure to unearth the long-lost fortune of One-Eyed Willie, a legendary 17th-century pirate.

Elma’s museums will be open from 6:00-8:30pm. The Depot Museum is located on south Busti Avenue (south of the covered bridge; east of the School). It contains a history of the railroad industry formerly in Elma, including the roundhouse, as well as other historical artifacts unique to the Elma area. The Schoolhouse Museum is located on north Busti Avenue (north of the covered bridge and across from the water tower). It contains memorabilia from Elma area schools; including the Elma Lutheran Church School, Elma I.C. Church Academy, Elma Public School, Our Lady of Lourdes Church School, and local country schools.

The concession stand at the park will be open throughout the night with proceeds going to Elma’s Museums and Trailhead.
