Boy Scouts offer New Nova and Supernova Programs

The Boy Scouts of America is constantly striving to stay relevant to the needs and interests of today’s youth. With that in mind, the BSA is launching their new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) initiative with the unveiling of the NOVA and Supernova programs. Both awards are available to Scouts at all stage of the Scouting program (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing). The Nova award is a patch that can be worn on the uniform and is designed around fun requirements designed to encourage further exploration of the STEM areas already being done within the badges that a Scout is working on. In Nova, Scouts work with counselors who help them get through their requirements showing them fun and easy ways to learn more about one of the STEM areas. Additional segments can be earned for each of the other 3 STEM areas. Supernova is a more advanced program requiring Scouts to work with a registered Supernova Mentor (similar to a Merit Badge Counselor). Upon completing the requirements Scouts receive a Supernova Medal and Certificate. For more information on the Nova and Supernova programs please go to www.scouting.org/stem/awards.

Supernova Mentors are needed to provide opportunities for Scouts in these programs. This is very similar to a Merit Badge Counselor as you will need to be at least 21 years old, register with the council as Code 52, and be a subject matter expert in one of the STEM fields. This is a non-unit position and requires no fee. In addition to the BSA Adult Registration form, mentors must also complete the Supernova Awards Mentor Information Application and complete the BSA Youth Protection training for the age group they are mentoring. Anyone interested in serving on the Council STEM committee should contact Chris Kangas, Council STEM Advisor, at 319-234-2867.
