Get to Know Your Silver Beaver Award Winners of 2012

Calvin R. Iehl

Cal is currently registered as the ScoutMaster for Troop 0055 in Cedar Falls. Cal has come up the ranks from Cub Scout to being a jamboree Scoutmaster plus. Cal will be the Assistant Scoutmaster for Jamboree 2013. Cal has several hundred nights of camping, including high adventure to the Boundary Waters, Isle Royale and Changing of the Guard with Troop 55 at Buckingham Palace in London, England.

Cal received his Brotherhood in the Order of the Arrow in 2002 and received his Vigil in 2009. Cal was a NOAC Contingent Leader in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2012. Cal is Wood badge trained (Bear) and recipient of the Triple Crown Award.

Cal and his wife Deb are owners of the Agape Therapy business located in Cedar Falls and are members of the American Physical Therapy Association and Iowa Chapter American Physical Therapy Association from 1982 to present. He has been a member of the Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce from 1986-present. He has been for 4 years President of the Northeast District Iowa Chapter American Physical Therapy Association. Cal has been a test item author for the Iowa Physical Therapy State Licensure Board of Examiners. He has been a member People to People International Physical Therapist Delegate to China in 1992. He has taught in Waterloo, Waverly-Shell Rock, Bangladesh and Thailand. Cal has done Mission work in Duluth, MN. Nicaragua, Costa Rica, China, Bangladesh and Thailand. Is a Co-leader of the Men’s Bible Study at Prairie Lakes Church and is involved with the First Baptist church on the Mission Board, Deacon Board, Hand bell Choir and Choir member. Cal is a Sunday School Teacher at Trinity Wesleyan church as well as a Coach and referee for Soccer, Football and Baseball.

He helps others through his actions and prayers to walk along the paths of life.

Cal and his wife Deb have three Eagle Scout sons, one Life Scout son and one Bear Cub Scout son.

Douglas (Doug) Kangas

Doug began his volunteer experience in the Transatlantic Council (Germany) as a Webelos Den Leader when his oldest was ready for Webelos. While in the Transatlantic Council, Doug attended Cub Scout Wood Badge (Buffalo), served as a Cub roundtable Commissioner, staffed Cub Scout Leader Basic training and was a Boy Scout Troop Committee member.

Doug and family moved to the Winnebago Council in 1982 and continued to staff Cub Scout Leader basic training and his role as a Cub Roundtable Commissioner while completing his Wood Badge ticket. Doug continued on to Boy Scouting with his sons as a Committee Member with Troop 55 and then as Scoutmaster for Troop 55. His troop camped every year at Ingawanis as well as to Philmont one summer. Doug staffed multiple University of Scouting, Klondike Derby and camporee events through the years. In 1985 Doug was 2nd Assistant Scoutmaster for the Jamboree and followed that in 1989 as Chairman of the Jamboree Contingent. Doug is a recipient of the Wabuha District Award of Merit. Doug has guided many young men to their Eagle ranks.

After moving to Colorado in 1996, Doug assisted with planning the annual Rocky Mountain Council dinner and summer golf tournament fund raisers. He served on the council’s 2st Century Visioning Committee. Doug helped with the council’s camp workdays and served as a Scoutmaster for a group of Lone Scouts one summer.

Upon returning to Winnebago Council in 2008, Doug has assisted with the Annual golf Tournament Fund raising events.

Doug is an active member of the University of Northern Iowa Panther Scholarship Club as one of his passions is athletics and has been active in the American Legion and Elks.

Doug and his wife Christie have two sons, Chris of Waverly, an Eagle Scout, and Tim of Waverly who reached Life rank. All five of their grandchildren, Keely, Haley, Linnea, Matt and Joey have also been involved in the Winnebago Council from Bear, Life and Venturers in Pack & Troop 90 out of Waverly .

Mary Jane Michels

Mary Jane is currently registered as the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 66 in Decorah. She has held this position for the past 4 years. Other positions held in Scouting for Mary Jane are Den Leader, Cub master and Webelos Leader of Pack 3067 also in Decorah. She is also a District Committee Member for Twin Rivers and District Member at Large for Twin Rivers. Mary Jane is out of council/state-Wood Badge trained in 2008.

As a reward for boys selling popcorn, Mary Jane started Luther College Fun Day and held this for five years. Merit Badge College for Twin Rivers has been in effect for four years because of Mary Jane’s involvement for this event. She has developed a Camping Weekend associated with the Merit Badge College. This past April, 40 boys received the Chess Merit Badge award as the activity during this Camping Weekend. She has worked with surrounding troops to work on Merit Badges as a group for a day and has done at least three groups this way. Mary Jane has hosted numerous summertime activities to earn merit badges other than ones offered at most Merit Badge Colleges and invited other units to participate in this event. She is currently working with Scouts with special needs in the troop in order for those individuals to obtain their Eagle Rank. This includes Eagle projects and Board of Reviews. She is always looking out for the youth and more than willing to work with them.

Mary Jane is a member of St. Benedict Parish in Decorah and a member of St. Margaret’s Circle, Rosary Society, and Catholic Daughters of America. She is also the wedding coordinator for the Church.

Mary Jane and her husband Ron have one son, Alex, who is an Eagle Scout.

Stephen (Steve) Paul Schwake Sr.

Steve is currently a Committee Member of Troop 29 under the Grace Reformed Church and Blessed Sacrament Charter Organizations in Waterloo, IA. Previous to this position Steve was the Scoutmaster for Troop 29 since 2005.

Steve became a Boy Scout in Des Moines, IA in the late 60’s and earned 2nd Class rank. A member of the Order of the Arrow in 2000 and is in the Brotherhood. He became a Vigil Honor candidate in 2012.

Awards earned by Steve are the District Award of Merit, Camping Committee Member, Order of the Arrow Advisor and is Wood Badge Trained.

Positions Steve held from 1975 to present include Explorer Advisor, Assistant Explorer Advisor, Committee Member for Pack 3126 and 3029 of the Grace Reformed Church, Roundtable commissioner, Unit Commissioner, District Committee Member, OA Chapter Advisor and Camping Committee.

Volunteering for Merit Badge Colleges, many Eagle Scout Projects and Scouting for Food are a few of the many areas you will see Steve at. Because of Steve’s busy work schedule he is not always able to adjust his schedule to the Troop’s but makes an effort to participate in troop functions including long term camping, weekend camp outs and meetings.

Steve can be seen and counted on at each of the camps assisting Rangers to maintain the grounds or whatever was needed. He has participated in the Camp Discover and Camp Quest programs and also helps with One of Service at George Wyth Park. Steve and his son, Steve Jr. cut down the tree in the front of the Service Center this past summer when it was over 100 degrees out. Steve is the kind of man that puts all his energy into a project and sees that it is done.

Steve and Donna have three sons and one daughter. Steve II is an Eagle Scout and Michael has earned the Star Rank.
