Sunday at the Quarry 2014

Come celebrate Earth Science Week on Sunday, October 5th, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at BMC’s Sunday at the Quarry! (West of Dewar Iowa on East Donald Road- 4618 E. Donald Road).

The theme this year is “Our Natural Resources: A River Runs Through It” with an emphasis on watersheds and our resources within those watersheds.

There will be rock, mineral, and fossil collecting, quarry field trips, programs by the geological surveys, IOWATER, UNI Earth Science Dept., Soil and Water District, City of Waterloo, Black Hawk Gem and Mineral Club, and MUCH MORE!

Fun, information, a great way to spend and afternoon, and it’s FREE for all ages!!

As always, this is a great opportunity for all ages, groups, organizations to have a display, participate in all of the great activities and have a Sunday at the Quarry!

The following is a letter to all Scouts:

This year, the Sunday at the Quarry event will be held on October 5th, 2014, at the BMC Aggregates’ Morgan Quarry located just west of Dewar, IA on East Donald Road (4618 E. Donald Rd). Program participants and presentations include University of Northern Iowa Earth Science Department, Iowa Geological Survey, IOWATER, U.S. Geological Survey, Black Hawk County Soil and Water Conservation Watershed Program, Black Hawk Gem and Mineral Society, City of Waterloo, and many more. There will be programs for young and old, Scouts, School Groups, all youth organizations, the general public and everyone interested in the Earth Sciences. Everyone will have the opportunity to do rock, fossil, and mineral collecting with the Gem and Mineral Society, do a Geology Tour of the Quarry, and many other programs oriented and designed for young people. In addition, there will be displays and information centers for adults too so there is something for everyone. The Theme this year is : “OUR NATURAL RESOURCES: “A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT.”

Also, for the past several years BMC Aggregates has supplied area Educators with the Earth Science Week Tool Kits produced by the American Geological Institute which include posters, activities, and great information including subject matter CDs.
